Effective January 1, 2014, Illinois will allow seriously ill patients who have established relationships with a doctor to obtain medical marijuana. Through a bill signed on Thursday, Illinois will establish a four-year pilot program to allow for the growing and selling of medical marijuana.
The Illinois law has been touted by Gov. Pat Quinn (D) as "one of the strictest" in the nation. Unlike more than a dozen states that permit private individual to grow the drug, Illinois will provide 24-hour surveillance for 22 state-run cultivation centers and 60 dispensaries. Illinois will also deny reciprocity, which means those who can legally obtain medical marijuana in other states will not be allowed to do so in Illinois without obtaining a prescription from a
Illinois doctors will be able to prescribe marijuana for more than 30 medical illnesses, including cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, Crohn's disease, and multiple sclerosis.
